Fitness Ridge Biggest Loser Resort, Ivins, Utah

After staying in Mesquite for 5 nights and just enjoying the restaurant and machines at the casino, we headed up to Ivins, Utah.  Ivins is just west of St. George.  We checked in at the resort, boy that is a misleading name, and got orientated.  Then we went for our weigh-in, which was more that just that.  We got a printout of our body makeup.  How much fat, how much lean, on our legs and arms and how much fat we needed to lose.

Our room is lovely.  The facility is lovely.  The staff is very, very nice.

The schedule they gave us, on the other hand, is overwhelming.  We wake at about 5:30 IN THE MORNING!!!!!  We go directly to a stretch class.  Sounds relaxing, right?  Wrong!  It hurts, its a torture class.  But it is necessary, because after breakfast, which is lovely, we choose from 6 items including oatmeal or eggs or granola, we go on a 2 hour hike.  Some of the hikes are 4.2 mile of pure uphill.  We need that oatmeal.

When we arrived it was 94 degrees.  That was what we expected.  Hot.  But the rest of the weeks was in the 60's and 70's.  Perfect hiking weather.  And the scenery.....wow.  We were hiking in Snow Canyon State Park.  Yes, as you will see in the pictures, Snow canyon is red rocked.  It turns out it is named after the Snow family who donated it to the state.  I always wondered about that.

After the hike we went to another stretch class.  I guess that's to keep us from tightening up, but, boy it hurts.

Then off to a lecture.  I dreaded the lectures.  It turns out they were fun and very informative.  Even I, who know everything, learned something.

Then we got to go to lunch.  Soup, salad and a main course, like pumkin seed crusted chicken with roasted carrots.  Yummy.

After lunch, was another lecture followed by 3 45 minute exercise classes.  Things like boot camp and circuit training and kick boxing and water zumba.   We had only 15 minutes to change workout clothes from hiking to workout, to pool, to dinner, and get to our next place.  We would have run between places, but we were too sore and tired to move that fast.

Then we get Dinner.  Dinner comes with dessert.  OK, so they are small servings, but they are dessert.  We got tarts (about 1/2 inch each), pineapple soft serve, chocolate chip cookies and chocolate covered strawberries (huge strawberries).

After dinner we were done, except for Tues and Thurs when we had one more lecture.

By that time we were exhausted and collapsed into the bed, to arise again at 5:30.

On Friday, instead of our hike, we walked/ran a 5K.  Duane came in second and I came in third in our age group.  Duane was very excited to find that he made his miles in 15 minutes.  When he was in basic training in the Army, he was required to do a mile in 15 minutes.  He just barely did it, and he was in the best shape of his life then.  I am so proud of him.

On Saturday we to had graduation.  We got to see the video they shot throughout our week.  If you want to see it you can.  Go to http://biggestloserresort.zenfolio.com/051014   password fitnesso1   The first item is the video.  The pictures are of the whole group at different times during the week.  Look at the scenery.  As a shortcut, my favorite is number 413.  It shows me running to the finish line of the 5k.  Duane had finished and came back to run the end with me.  Another important picture is number 52   where Duane and I are standing under a stop sign.  That sign is at the end of a 4.2 mile hike.  It is an accomplishment to get there so we all get our pictures taken there.  Some other shots are 29, 30 and 11.  There are more, but we don't want to bore you more than we have to.

On Sunday we had our check out.  As you would expect our weight was down, but just a little.  What we didn't expect, nor did the instructors expect, was that our fat content was UP and our muscle content was DOWN.  That is NOT how it is supposed to work after all our work.  So, we have to figure out what works for our bodies, now that both of us have diabetes, and how much difference that makes in our response to diet and exercise.  We worked very hard and now we will continue to learn what we need to do.
